Smugairle Róin (seal snot) = Jellyfish
My sons and I found a Barrel Jellyfish washed up on a local beach - where we often see seals. This jellyfish is common in Irish waters and has a sting that is slightly stronger than the typical Moon Jellyfish.
It typically is up to 40 cm (16 in) in diameter, but can exceptionally reach 150 cm (59 in) or larger, making it the largest jellyfish in Irish waters. The species could typically grow up to one meter (3.2 feet) and weigh up to 25 kilograms (55 lbs).
A group of jellyfish is called a "smack" or a "smuck"
Jellyfish are eaten by humans in certain cultures. They are considered a delicacy in some Asian countries, where species in the Rhizostomae order are pressed and salted to remove excess water. Australian researchers have described them as a "perfect food", sustainable, and protein-rich but relatively low in food energy.
Since jellyfish have no hard parts, fossils are rare.
