In Irish/Gaelic Kingfisher is Cruidín or Biorra an uisce. Biorra an uisce translates roughly as "water spear" which is apt as we saw it dive in for a fish just as if some had thrown something  into the river.

It has beautiful colours apparently come from it being the first bird off Noah's Ark. The sun coloured it's breast and the blue sky & sea gave it the complementary blues on its back. These are complementary colours with blue being a primary colour facing orange. Orange is a secondary colour - a mix of two primary colours (red & yellow).

It is said if you hang a dead kingfisher outside it will point the way of the prevailing wind. Or you can always hang it in your wardrobe to keep your clothes fresh...NOT thing I have done or recommend!
