Splanc = Cuckoo Wrasse 🐟🐠

During an aquarium visit (my kids are mad about them) I was posed the question; "Do we have a coral reef in Ireland?" "Maybe?!" 🤷 It turns out we do off the coast of Kerry*. This coral reef is home to many fish, however during our aquarium visit the lads were particularly keen on the wrasse. Kerry is where we can also find the place Coosrinaneanwallig, which comes from Cuas Rinn an Aonbhallaigh (the cove point of the solitary Wrasse).**

Splanc means flash or spark, clear to see why this fish has this name with its bright orange and blue colouring. However,the female is a mix of orange, red, and pink.

Tá sé splanctha acu = they have put him in a rage.

Bhí sé splanctha ina diaidh = he was crazy about her.

It can also be used as a very and appears to be used in phrases of passion, be it romantic or anger.🥰🤬

The name cuckoo wrasse comes from Cornish fishermen who associated the blue markings with bluebell flowers. In the Cornish Celtic language, a bluebell is bleujenn an gog, literally "the cuckoo flower".🐦🌻

Found in deep waters and in particular rocky areas. So the Irish Coral reef in the South West is a perfect habitat for it!🪸
